Types of shops
Hypermarket – a retailer with the sales area over 2500 m² (Profindex and Nielsen) (in the area with at least 50 000 residents).
Supermarket – a retailer with the sales area of 300 – 2500 m² (Nielsen) and the importance of food articles and convenience goods is over 2/3.
Big supermarkets (1000 – 2500 m²) as well as hypermarkets in Estonia are located on the roads leading to big residential districts (with at least 25 000 residents).
Small supermarkets (300 – 1000 m²) are situated in residential districts with 5000 – 10 000 residents. Discounter – (Profindex shop/warehouse) a retailer with the sales area of 500 – 800 m².
Hard discounter – the selection is under 1000 units (at least 50 000 residents in the area).
Soft discounter – the selection is 2500 – 3500 units (at least 10 000 residents in the area).
Local shop – a retailer with the sales area up to 300 m² and the importance of food articles and convenience goods is 90 – 100%.
Minimarket – a local shop in which the importance of food articles and convenience goods does not exceed 2/3. They are located in small dwelling areas.
Seven eleven – a convenience store with the sales area up to 200 m², these are located in gas stations or any other crowded areas.
